Magna Carta

For those who already know Magenta, Magna Carta is operated by the same owner of Magenta as Magenta now has already closed down. What a coincidence that the name of the restaurant have the same first three (3) characters, 'Mag' and ends with the same two (2) characters, 'Ta'. From Wikipedia, the word 'Magna Carta' actually means it is an English charter, originally issued in the year 1215, and reissued later in the 13th century in modified versions which omit certain temporary provisions, including the most direct challenges to the monarch's authority (source from Wikipedia).

Forgetting about the history, let's move on to the restaurant itself. Magna Carta is now located at the old courthouse opposite the Kuching Waterfront. Upon walking in, you could not miss the menu which is displayed on a big blackboard. Hmmm....are they going green? So if you want to make an order, you will have to stand and order.  As you can see there are a few dining tables placed near the blackboard.  It really feels awkward if you sit near those dining tables because it would feel like other people keep looking at you although in actual fact, they are looking at the menu. Who knows they are checking out how the foods look like... *smile with tongue out

The restaurant only has one window overlooking the waterfront area.  From that window, you can have a great view of our magnificient Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) building but unfortunately that night the lights are not really switched on. Therefore in the end, we chose to sit outside along the corridor. The staffs there are very friendly. Salt ordered Spaghetti Carbonara and Pepper ordered Beef Stroganoff With Buttered Rice as it was recommended by the staff.  We didn't wait quite long for the foods to come.

Spaghetti Carbonara

Beef Stroganoff With Buttered Rice

Spagetti Carbonara is nice but the portion is a bit less.  The Beef Stroganoff With Buttered Rice is nice, the beef is tender, not hard.  Halfway through the meal, Salt suggested to order a Pepperoni pizza. Maybe he is still hungry due to the small portion of his meal. Pepper likes pepperoni :-) (It rhymes...No wonder she is called Pepper).   This is how the pizza looks like.

Pepperoni Pizza

We enjoyed the whole meal at Magna Carta.  Not forgetting the restaurant is a WIFI zone.  After having our dinner, we sat down and relaxing while enjoying the wi-fi service provided.

WIFI Zone Area

There is one room in Magna Carta called Privacy Chamber. What do you think is this room for?  Private room for private and large gathering?  For those who don't understand this signage will have a hard time finding the washroom.

Zhong Yuan Kitchen 中原小馆

Zhong Yuan Kitchen is one of our favourite places to eat lunch or dinner. It is located at one of the prime areas, which is Premier 101, Kuching. Nowadays it is very hard to find parking there because of the booming of eateries, karaoke and 'lim teh' places. Salt's first impression of this eatery was that the shop's name sounded like one of those inns he has always watched in the ancient wu xia series. Anyhow, what is important is that the foods here taste nice. It started with one shoplot but now extended to 2 shoplots to cater for larger gathering and events.

Recently we went to try one of their set menu on offered 'Set Menu for 4 - Set A'.  One good thing about here is that you don't have to wait long even though the place is full of people.  You can actually view their chefs in action here as the kitchen is an open concept. Our dishes were serve at one go.

What both of us like about Zhong Yuan is that it has this cute rice barrel.  This rice barrel is good in the sense that those who wants to eat more rice, can scoop more and those who wants to eat less can scoop less

Seafood soup
Seafood soup.....Pepper likes this soup very much and can drink as much as the whole bowl..no lah, just kidding.   This bowl of soup has a variety of seafood inside.....it tastes like the sea cucumber soup that we normally eat at wedding banquet.

Three-Cups-Chicken

Three-Cups-Chicken named after the ingredients 1 cup soy sauce, 1 cup of sesame oil and 1 cup of rice wine. The dish originates from the Jiangxi province of southern China but it has somehow become a popular taiwanese cuisine. There are a saying that if a restaurant that cannot cook three-cups-chicken is not a true taiwanese restaurant.

Mani cai eggs
Mani Cai Eggs is a local delight in Sarawak.  If you come to Sarawak, don't forget to try out this delicacy.   Both of us think that Zhong Yuan Kitchen's Mani Cai Eggs is the best in town.  The Mani Cai still looks nice after it is fried and not like some other shops, the vege looks dark in colour like over fried when it is served.

Vinegar Fish Fillet
Vinegar Fish Fillet.....this fish fillet tastes a bit like sweet and sour fish fillet

Braised beancurd with salted fish.
Braised beancurd with salted fish is also one of Salt and Pepper's favourites.  The saltiness from the salted fish makes one's appetite to open up and resulting would eat more.

Altogether these are the 5 dishes served for the 'Set Menu for 4 - Set A' and the portion is just nice for 5 or 6 persons consumption.  It only costs RM58 for that set of meal.  The menu for 4 persons actually have 4 types.  There are 2 types costs RM48 and another 2 types costs RM58.

The beginning of Salt n Pepper

What is Salt n Pepper? What comes to one's mind would be a traditional paired set of condiment usually found on a dining table.  To us, it has another different meaning. My name starts with P so you may call me Pepper and my boyfriend's name starts with S so you may call him Salt.  The combination of this would be Salt n Pepper.  Since Salt n Pepper is related to food, we would probably share mostly about our food's trails.

Today is 10-10-10.....it will be the most memorable day as today will be the birth of our Salt n Pepper blog.  Happy 10-10-10 everyone.... ^_^
